Welcome to the forum. Have a look at the New to Photography (http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/showlibrary.php?title=Indexes:New_To_Photography_Book)
section under the library section - it is a great place to start. Cheers

Welcome to AP. As Allie says check out the New To Photography section of our Library, and then start posting photos for critique and learn from the advice and feedback.

Welcome to AP,
your question about tripods is a very well repeated query on AP.
Perhaps if you use the search function on the site and read some of 6,973,284.5 posts on the subject you will get a bit of an idea about the subject.
Also, questions such as yours are usually seen by more viewers in the general help section (http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?21-General-Help) but as a start, I will offer the advice to not buy the first "cheap deal" that comes your way because that is the easiest way to buy 6 tripods before you get the one that does the job properly.
