View Full Version : Christmas Meet Up for southern GC / northern NSW - sunrise & breakfast? 16/12/2012
Analog6

I'd love to do this - anyone from other areas welcome of course. My thoughts were a nice subrise on the beach - if Mother nature will play along - and breakfast at Currumbin Surf Club, where you can sit right out over the water.
Anyone up for it? I was thinking Sunday morning maybe second/third weekend in December? Those dates would be 8/9 or 15/16.
Poke your lens up here and we can change the title to the chosen date (with the help of a mod :)) once a date is decided on.

I am from Alstonville and just joined. I would be happy to come and say Hi and take some photos. Sunday morning would work for me.
Cheers

I'm leaning to the 15th, hope this suits everyone. I'm in Tassie now until 15th Nov but look forward to a meetup, as William said we are way overdue.
For a moment there Willy, I thought you may have started your own Bureau of Meteorology. :confused013
Shame someone's already pinched the name. :(
Argh and this is why I only do sunrises in Winter.. 4am wakeup??? haha..
William

Best time of the day!
thinking of coming along as well , will keep an eye on the thread
15th works for me..yayy!!! I will have finished my photo shoots by then. I can't wait to join in again. Been wayyyy to long.
Are you talking about meeting at the usual spot at Currumbin Beach Carpark?
It takes me about an hour to get there but its all worth it to see you all :)
What time is meetup...4.30 or 5am??

It's a week before I jump on a plane to Cambodia, so I think I can make it, provided I remember....
Maybe I should ride in this time. Saves getting jealous of all the motorcyclists on the way home.

Yes, the usual spot. Sunrise at the moment is 0443, and it gets earlier until about 21 December, so it had better be 0415-0430. I will see if I can make a booking at the surf club at Currumbin Rock for us (William - do you have to be a member to book?).

Personally, I'd prefer to be there in the grey light well before. Bring a torch :D
and Caffine tablets.
For those of us who don't know where we're supposed to be going can we post a map?
Also, what are the tides doing about then, William, I'm expecting you to have an answer to that one! :D
It will be good to know the meeting place pref. a map will help.

Firstly stupid me has done it again with the date - I must be calendar dyslexic! Sunday is the 16th. We are meeting up SUNDAY MORNING 16 DECEMBER at 0415-0430. If anyone gets there later just walk down to the beach towards the rock, you should see us there OK.
Booking is made - I will have to make final numbers by Thursday prior . See reply below from Vikings:
"Thank you for your reservation enquiry for breakfast on the 16th December 2012. I am pleased to advise your booking for Odille x 15 guests at 7.30am on the balcony is confirmed.
If you could please confirm that you have received this confirmation email from us, also could you please confirm numbers at least two days prior.
We only hold reservations for 15 minutes from the reserved time. Please call us if you anticipate being late for your booking so we can extend your booking time."
Meetup point will be the car park where we have met before. On the attached map (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Wallace+Nicoll+Park,+Currumbin&hl=en&ll=-28.128037,153.487329&spn=0.004163,0.006625&sll=-28.12851,153.485608&sspn=0.004163,0.006625&t=h&hq=Wallace+Nicoll+Park,&hnear=Gold+Coast+Queensland&z=18) it is the one opposite Wallace Nicoll park. A screen dump below showing the meet up spot and the surf club where we will have breakfast is at the bottom of the page.

Grge, I plan to be there well before too, you know my big yellow van, just look out for it. The tide site (http://tides.willyweather.com.au/qld/gold-coast/currumbin-beach.html) does not have predictions for December yet, I'll post tem on 1 December if they are there then.

Sorry I got it wrong at the start, I really am terrible with dates and days! And I was really careful too, and I still mucked it up. Looking forward to seeing everyone. I can offer a double sofa bed the night before if anyone is interested. Note you may have to share with a cat or 3 so don't take this up if you are allergic.
Odile....Ivan will be with me. We thought we might head up to Currumbin rockpools afterwards for a look. So plus 1.
A couple of old members want to join in and catch up too...Kerri and David as well.
So can you add those as well Odile.

You can also shoot a nice Sunrise at Elephant Rock (200mtrs South) At Vikings Surf Club , I go there often, Probably tomorrow , Or another place I was at this morning (150mtrs South again) Flatrock is my standby spot , Good clear view this time of year if there is good cloud
Couple from this morning , Looking North and South

Thanks, Odille. Please pass on my name etc to anyone who's thinking of visiting NZ this year. This past year we've welcomed 4 Aussies, a family from the Netherlands and finally a young US soldier on leave from Afghanistan.

I have confirmed 15 attendees for the breakfast. Realistically, a couple of us might not make it, and/or a couple of extras might show up. I'll ring them if there is any major change on the day. Breakfast time is 7.30am. Link to the breakfast menu (http://supporters.currumbinslsc.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Breakfast.pdf) so you have an idea of prices.
I'll have to unfortunately pull out. Have some important things on over the next week or two, and I can't really afford to be zombie like during the day after a 3am wakeup :2ambiv:
Enjoy it though, I look forward to seeing all of your great images!

This is probably good advice for everyone. I plan to get there about 4am Qld time and go straight down to the beach, the light comes up so early now it is mid-summer. So to everyone coming, I will park my big yellow Kia van right by the walkway down, if you arrive and see it there walk through to the beach and turn left and head for the rock. I'm really looking forward to this one too, been far too long between drinks!

Might have to be extra carefull still by Sunday, Big 1.8mtr tides , Combined with a 1.5 to 3mtr swell , The surf is pumping with a lot of water moving about , The Tide is low @3.24am coming up to a high @10.13am , My tip is wear shoes that can get wet and are slip proof (Sort of) Sandals are good and are acceptable in Vikings , As are thongs if you wish :2smile:

It's Friday and I'm so excited about this but need to wait another day :(...it's ok...I got my scotch to keep me company to pass the time away.:beer_mug:

It's Look'in good , Was up and at it this morning (4.00am) @ Snapper Rocks, It was already light :2enew: I would suggest if you can make it 4.00 would be a good time , There was some light cloud which turned pink as the Sun came up , The swell is dropping , Dont forget Sunnies as well , You will need them by 6.30-7.00 , I'll be there early (3.45/4.00) Look for Odille's yellow van or my Nissan (White) Hatchback, I'll put a tripod on the roof (Should'nt be to many cars with a tripod on the roof) :2smile: The car park at the Alley Currumbin , Duringan St , Lifeguard Tower 12, If you get lost , Give me a call on 0488224825
Hi Everyone - really looking forward to tomorrow morning!
This is my first proper sunrise shoot - and it's a seacscape - does it get any better!? :2biggn:
Thanks Odille for organising and William your advice and sunrise experience is much appreciated.
I hope you don't mind but was just wondering if anyone could help me out with two questions I have so I don't waste anyone's time in the morning..
1. I have two tripods - a cheaper flimsier one and an expensive stronger one - which should I use? The stronger one will of course be better at combatting wind and water surges - but is it better to use the cheaper one in the salt water?
2. I have a Canon 10-22mm wide angle which I was going to use - however someone knocked over my tripod at the recent Riverfire show in Brisbane and the plastic on the front of this lens is damaged/dented which means my ND8 filter (which I've never used - very excited!) doesn't screw on very well - I can sort of jam it in on an angle. My other lens I could use is a Canon 17-55mm - so should I just use this lens with the ND8 instead, even though it's not as good a landscape lens as the 10-22mm?
Really appreciate your thoughts.. :scrtch:
Thanks,
Amanda
William
15-12-2012, 1:43pm
First Amanda , What camera are you going to use ? Then I'll get to the other questions :2smilS:
OK, From your profile you have a 7D, For the sunrise I would use the 10-22 , The ND filter unless it's graduated wont work , You need ND Grad filters , I have some spares that you can hand hold , I'll help or hold for you if you want , RE : Tripod, I used a cheapy for years with no worries , Seeing your gear is'nt that heavy I'd say just use the cheapy and you'll have more fun without the worry of getting sand in the legs of the goodie , Most of the good sunrise shots will only be about 1/6th to 1/10 sec , Not that long , Hope this helped - Bill
It helped heaps -thanks Bill.
No my ND filter isn't graduated, I didn't even realise but of course that's what I need - can't wait for the day learning photography stops me feeling like an idiot! :o
I really appreaciate the offer of borrowing your graduated filter - thank you so much.
See you with my cheapy tripod in the morning!
I know this is late notice but I'll be able to make it tomorrow, although might not be able to do breaky as I've got to shoot off elsewhere! Will be good to meet everyone.

Have a great meet everyone.
Well a gloomy overcast sky met us in the dim light of predawn for our 4am meeting, about 18-20 AP'ers and associated hangers on ventured onto the rock shelf to claim a place. With a rising tide and a heavy swell more than one got caught by the sea. Shoes, shorts, shirts and unfortunately cameras felt the dampness:2distu:, Thankfully the cameras still operated after the splash.
One AP'er took a spill on the rocks, thankfully only pride and a broken and bent tripod was the result, though bruises should appear in a day or so:2confu:.
Patchy light rain plagued us after dawn til we retired to the Surf Club for some well earned coffee and breakfast only to watch the cloud burn off and the sunshine blase across the beaches, the tide continued to rise and the swell continued to grow til our earlier rocky out crop was engulfed in white water.
A most enjoyable meet with some familiar and new faces.

Yes, 'twas good until Muggins here fell over and bent all her tripod legs! Lots of people took pictures of my little contretemps so no doubt someone will put one up here soon. I got home and had a nana nap as I felt like a Bond gitl - shaken not stirred. I'll definitely be limping tomorrow.

Another great SE Qld meet up, been too long between meets. It was great to catch up with those not seen for a while and also to meet some new faces. We should do this again before next Christmas!! :xmas31:

Dave was a pleasure to meet you and thank you very much for the advice / info:th3:

Yes,w e haven't been doing enopugh. How about we try for once a month in 2013, or is that too ambitious for everyone? Suggestions for next venue
?

I suggest Oriellies. I hear it's nice this time of year.
I'm still yet to get a decent shot of Curtis Falls Mt Tambourine too.
Edit:
If it's Tambourine, then Camping is available in Grandma's backyard. We will be able to bed a couple in single beds.
Bring your long lens, you can see the coast from her front varandah on a good day...

I think monthly might work over the holiday season given people are less likely to have work/other commitments. Otherwise, even every two months or quarterly would be great.
And yep something in the bush next time could be good. Oriellies, natural bridge, any of those. For birding I think one of our members here frequents the Spit? Would give me an excuse to go get that Sigma 120-300 2.8.....

If it's birding, I suggest Border Ranges NP, Sheep Station Creek has Camping. I saw more birds there then I could poke a stick Camera at

Yes, it's somewhere I've wanted to go for an overnighter, so I can go to the Antarctic beech forest. I wonder how busy the campground is during the school hols . . . When do you get back from Camdobia?
