Would love to hear/read your thoughts on your ideal single set up, let me explain.
The idea here is to offer up the One lens and One body you could live with, if you where given only one choice.
The lens and bodies can be either one you'd love but say cant afford - film - digital - old - new, what ever, but stick to Canon as it's in this forum.

Personally, the 1DX would be my pick for a body, and the 70 - 200mm L F2.8 MK ii IS, would have to be my lens, given I mainly shoot land/sea scapes and my kids faster moving sports. The lens is, as I see it, my best compramise here.

How about you?

If pressed I'd maybe sneak in a 24-70, but the 1DX/70-200II would be hard combination to beat for versatiity and perfomance. :th3:

canon 7 rangefinder with 50mm f/0.95 lens. One was on ebay last year in pristine condition for a steal ($2300). Alas i have too many cameras already.

In digital wouldnt mind 1dx or 1ds3 with a 50 1.2 or 1.0 as a single setup :D

I would probably set myself a challenge as a photographer: A compact-ish 5D3 and the new 35f2IS. Shoot the street and try not to look uber-geek or retro-geek.

Tough question. Whilst it'd be hard to live without a 'do it all' lens such as 24-105, I actually rarely use mine as I find it somewhat boring and it doesn't generate enough focus control / bokeh. I tend to go for more interesting lenses, eg 85mm 1.2 for portraits or narrow focus; mpe-65m for macro; or TSE 17mm for ultrawides / panos / tilt-shift. I can happily mount just one of these lenses and shoot all day. But could I live with just one of them for ever??

Mentioned a 50/1.0:
Canon made an EF 50/1.0L USM, now discontinued.
It is big, relatively heavy and very slow to focus and considered by most who have used it to be artistically and technically not as good as the EF50/1.2L and the Ef50/1.4. I almost bought one, for the shear passion of owing such a toy: in some ways I am disappointed I didn’t. The lens commands quite a reasonable price second hand.

Mentioned a 50/0.95
Canon also made a 50mm f/0.95.
This lens is an “S mount” and typically mounts to the Rangefinder Style cameras.
Although I have not used this lens, I have judged the results of Photographs made with it and it is truly exceptional wide open in available light in the hands of someone who can sculpt with available light.

Mentioned 1200/5.6L
The EF1200F/5.6L USM is an exceptional lens and many of us were treated at the Sydney Olympics – at the Rowing where at least two were used.
On a technical note - being an EF mount lens one would require the Canon EF-M Lens Adapter Kit for Canon EF / EF-S Lenses to mount this lens on the canon EOS-M . . . and I think the adapter's “tripod mount” would be useless.
