I'm pretty sure we have some. I am looking for elevated east facing spots with a view of the ocean between Cairns and Port Douglas for taking sunrise eclipse photos. can any of you advise me? Will be staying at Glengarry Park at Mowbray from 11 - 17 November and would love to get together while I am there too. Not the 12th or 13th though, that's eclipse eve and day.
Hi Odille,
Just saw your post :) There are a couple of APer's up here not that we get together ......
One of the best elevated possies would be the lookout at Wangetti, although I would imagine you would be fighting tooth and nail for a spot and its a bit south of where you staying, There are a lot of other spots on the Cairns to Port road just not so accessable & mostly to the south , I would suggest when you drive through on the 11th check them out and pick a spot then. I dont think I would be able to meet for that event but would be keen for a catch up while you here.
I'm a bit stuck for transport and live out of town but with enough notice I can usually organise something :)
Look forward to hearing from you

Thanks for that Cargo. The centreline is just south of Oak Beach and travelling west goes north west, and we want to be as close to it as possible. Any good spots will be like a 3 ring circus, this will be my third eclipse and chasers are a manic & obsessed lot. Will post more arrangements closer to the date

G'day Odille
Knowing a bit about that part of the country - tho not being a sun-chaser ...
It seems to me that you have many locations to choose from - all within a 1-hour drive from Cairns
Mareeba, Chillagoe, to the west & Mount Molloy, Mt Carbine or Lakeland on the Cooktown road
All these are west or north-west of the Cairns CBD
As to meeting other APers - if you are meandering anywhere near Undara, pop in and see "the boss" - Andrew
He's a great bloke

Thanks! I was actually thinking of going up or back the inland route via Undarra as I have wanted to see the lava tubes for many, many years. Probably on the way back ans then i can 'meander'. The trip up will be to a set schedule.
The centreline runs from Innisfail to just north of Broomfield, but for extra special shots it is best to be as close tot he centre as possible.

Hi, i am in machans beach(1st beach north of cairns) at the post office so am easy to find. On the weekend you are talking about there are already two thousand campsites booked along the roadside on the atherton tablelands( not really but most accomodation is booked out already) so.... it will be acase of plot the track of the sun and then get a map plot it on that and find out where it is in relation to where you are staying. There will be a LOT of people just pulling up on the roadside to view and take" the picture. If where you are staying has hills nearby you will probably get just as good a site as wondering all over the tablelands. Be warned there will be LOTS of people and cars and buses around and about, so take care.

Oh I know all that - there were over 4000 at the site we drove to in SA last time - all we eclipse chasing 'lunies' come out in droves. And I have the google map plot of the centreline etc. It's juts that we only have 2 days pnce we get there to find our 'spot' and I'd rather be elevated, so a little local knowledge comes in handy.

I'm also thinking of making my way up there for this event. I wonder if ti's worth starting a specific thread for the eclipse? Thoughts?

I do - it's a specialised type of photography. Where are you thinking of staying - we are getting a campsite at Glengarry caravan park (http://www.glengarrypark.com.au/) which is 'under the shadow' and near the centreline. The lady has kindly given me one near the office so I can leave my marquee thing set up and take the van out during the day, and she'll keep an eye on the (totally zipped up) marmquee with some stuff in it through the day. I'll start a thread in the astro section.
