Canon EOS 5D Mark III Firmware v1.1.2 available

Canon has released version 1.1.2 of the firmware for the EOS 5D Mark III.

The update fixes a number of small bugs and adds compatibility with the GP-E2 GPS receiver.

Very easy update procedure when using EOS Utility software!

I've never used EOS Utility to update the firmware on my cameras (I don't even have the software installed).

All you need to do is format a flash card, copy the file to the flash card via a card reader, and then select the firmware image file from within the firmware upgrade menu.

Than you are missing a lot of things that make life easier... :)

No, that's not the case.



Downloading images without removing the memory card

USB card readers are faster than using the camera and its cable, and removing the memory card isn't a problem.



Thethered shooting

Completely useless when you're standing on a coastal rock shelf at dawn as seawater rushes past you (I shoot mostly seascapes).



Updating Camera owner details and copyright details

I don't and never have entered that information into the camera. I know I own my camera, and I have a record of its serial number and other purchasing details.



Synchronising the date and time

I set the time on the camera twice a year (ie, when DST toggles), and it doesn't need to be synchronised with a stratum clock source or any other device I own.



Updating firmware

I can already do this quickly and conveniently as previously described, and have done so numerous times over the past seven years.

Bottom line: Use the EOS Utility if you like it, but in my case I don't need it.

There is always - especially with CF cards - a chance that you damage the pins by frequently removing and inserting the card or damage SD cards by touching the contact strips (static).

So you don't have your name and copyright details in the EXIF information of your photos from the start - or have to add it in the PP.....

Not all camera clocks are exact (mine is about 8 seconds slow per 24 hours... but I suppose you do not geo-synchronise your shots with a GPS generated location file.... :)

So - with computers and other gadgets integration EOS utility really has its advantages....
