Thanks all. I'm off "Auto", but only just. Still working out all the numbers. Beats me why the lowest number is the biggest, or something like that. Having a lot of fun actually experimenting with close up photography, and dof on plants and portraits. Good learning curve. Have a Nikon D3100 and thanks to a generous wife, and Christmas, have replaced to two lenses that came in the kit (18-55 and 55-200) with a Tamron 18-270. It's like my three other hobbies that cost me money, woodwork, fishing and golf. Always something else to go on the shopping list.

I'll post some photos as soon as I do some worth posting and I work out how to get them out of iPhoto.

Thanks

John

The lowest number is the biggest cause they are fractions. When you see something like f22, f8 and f4, they are really f 1/22 and f 1/8 and f 1/4, and as an eighth of anything is smaller than a quarter of the same thing, thus an aperture of f8 is smaller than an aperture of f4.

Hi Ricktas. Yeah I studied the maths, and the ratios of focal length etc. It'll just keep doing my head in until it becomes instinctive I guess. Good hint though. Always put the 1/nn over it until it becomes automatic. Must do that.
